Patek Philippe famously pioneered a vacuum-vaporisation technique in the late 1960's and 1970’s, fusing a mixture of cobalt and 24k gold onto a solid-gold plate to create the distinctive deep blue-gold dials of the Golden Ellipse collection. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOver time, the cobalt can degrade, gradually transforming the original blue-gold surface and creating a completely unique patina. This is a rare occurrence on Golden Ellipse dials and, when seen, the ageing is usually uneven, with areas of the original blue remaining and giving the dial a more speckled patchy appearance. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis example is particularly striking. Rather than ageing in isolated areas, the entire dial has transformed into a remarkably uniform greyish-bronze patina. The tone sits so naturally alongside the finish of the bracelet that the effect appears almost intentional, with an appearance reminiscent of a stone dial, giving the watch an exceptionally cohesive and distinctive appearance. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003ePerhaps even more impressively, the dial text remains beautifully intact. A protective layer of lacquer sits above the blue-gold surface, with the text printed onto this upper layer.
