Piaget’s start in the industry in 1874 as a successful high-precision movement manufacturer, supplying the most esteemed brands under the direction of passionate founder Georges Édouard Piaget, was a promising beginning for the company. Indeed, the respect the brand quickly gained for its expertise in movements catapulted the Piaget name to international fame. Moreover, a milestone occurred in 1943 when the company decided to register the brand name. With the manufacturers now signing all their movements with the Piaget name, it didn’t take long for global recognition and appreciation to follow.
It was Georges Édouard Piaget’s grandsons, Gérald and Valentin Piaget who undertook the brand’s geographical expansion, and did so successfully. A major pioneering feat for Piaget came in 1957 when they produced the iconic ultra-thin hand-wound Calibre 9P, that was only 2 mm thick. Then in 1960 they introduced the Calibre 12P, the world’s thinnest self-winding (automatic) movement, just 2.3 mm thick.
Though Piaget has been a pioneer of movements, the brands creativity should not be understated. Their designs and aesthetic vision for the outside of their watches are treated with as much respect and care to detail as the intricacies of the movement inside are. This first became evident in the 1960’s when Piaget introduced its collection of the world’s first watches to have dials made of hard stone, such as Jade. Furthermore, around the same time they presented the cuff watch to the public. It was the perfect mix of tradition and contemporary fashion intertwined.
Ever since Piaget have earned a name as trend-setters, inspiring other brands with their fascinating and beautiful designs. Piaget continue to push the boundaries with style, movement, form and function reaffirming its place amongst one of the top high-end watch manufacturers in the world.
