Bvlgari, better known by its spelling in the Latin alphabet, Bvlgari, was founded in 1884 by Greek jeweller Sotir Bulgari in Rome. In accordance with establishing the company, Bulgari opened a shop in Rome in Via Sistina, before eventually relocating to today’s flagship store in Via dei Condotti in 1905. Bulgari’s two sons, Costantino and Giorgio, assisted him with the opening of the store in 1905, and went on to contribute to the business. Following his son Giorgio’s death in 1966, the role of co-chief executive went to Giorgio’s son, and Sotir’s grandson, Gianni, who shared the position with his cousin Marina. Gianni was responsible for the globalization of Bulgari, opening branches in New York, Geneva, Monte-Carlo and Paris in the first half of the 1970’s. In 1985 Gianni resigned as CEO and sold his 1/3 share to his siblings, Paolo and Nicola, who became Chairman and Vice-Chairman, whilst Bulgari’s nephew was CEO.
Though Bulgari produce quality watches of excellence, the brand is also famed for their Jewellery pieces. This fact is often evident in some of Bulgari’s most iconic creations, where the form and function of Jewellery and watches intertwine. Perhaps the most exemplary example is Bulgari’s Serpenti, a bracelet-watch, which comprises a bracelet that folds round your wrist – like a serpent – and has a watch incorporated into the bracelet, usually at the end of the bracelet. The first model of this watch was created at the end of the 1940s, and subsequently different versions of the model have emerged over the years, each experimenting with various case shapes, positioning and the dial.
Over the years, Bulgari have amassed a collection of different watch lines amongst the Serpenti, such as the Assioma, Astrale, Daniel Roth, Gérald Genta and Bulgari-Bulgari lines - to name a few. Each has its own complex and expert mechanism manufactured completely by the company, who have earned and consistently maintained a reputation as a brand of luxury and pure class over the years.
