Rolex is the most renowned name in the watch industry and its watches the most desired. Since the company’s establishment in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex has been globally recognized and celebrated for producing wristwatches par excellence.
Introduced into the watchmaking industry at a time when pocket watches were the norm, the appeal of an elegant and reliable wristwatch was obvious to Wilsdorf. From the beginning Rolex has been revolutionary in its approach to design, reforming style and form. In 1926 Rolex created the world’s first waterproof watch – the Rolex Oyster. A year later this Rolex model crossed the English Channel on the wrist of English swimmer Mercedes Gleitze. Her challenging 10-hour swim provided the perfect scenario to test the credibility of the Rolex Oyster, which emerged successfully intact from the sea, along with Mercedes, affirming the Rolex brand.
Rolex continued their revolutionary streak in 1931 with their invention of the first self-winding movement. Rolex models that have this automatic mechanism can usually be distinguished by the word “perpetual” on the Rolex dial. Their improvements and developments to watchmaking, which continue today, set the standard for other watchmakers and is what makes Rolex leaders in the industry.
